In this paper I want to address a language about education existing within the Continental Germanic and Nordic traditions in education. My fear is that if we lose this language, we also risk losing a very rich theorizing about education. The Anglo/American traditions and language-use within educational research does not comprise of concepts such as Bildung, Didaktik, Erziehung and the rich theorizing entailed in these concepts. The Dialog project ‘Didaktik meets Curriculum’ (1998) addresses the historical differences in the evolution of two very distinct and influential traditions. By retracing some of the arguments for and against Pedagogik/Pedagogik, my aim is to retell and revive a rich theorizing of central phenomena within the field – crucial for future visions of educational research.
