A Pig, A Mango, and 15 Minutes: Writing Movidas to Racially Diversify Faculty in Academia

Fri, April 10, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

As U.S. university students become more racially diverse, tenure/d-track faculty remain 70+% white. Multiple factors account for racially diverse faculty underrepresentation, but the nature of writing mentorship is a standout factor. This paper highlights the use of movidas in mentoring racially diverse doctoral students to heal from writing trauma, build writing confidence, and write themselves into tenure.
