Listening to Pre-K and K Teachers in a Suburban School: (Re)imagining Support for Children Experiencing Homelessness

Wed, April 8, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

The study examines the experiences and challenges of pre-K and Kindergarten teachers who have worked with children experiencing homelessness in a Title I school located in a suburban area. Despite the existing literature’s contributions on homelessness in teacher education, there remains a paucity of literature on how teachers work with young children experiencing homelessness in their pre-K and K classrooms, particularly in a suburban area. Through analyzing the interview data and supplemented by teacher survey responses, this study aims to identify challenges and the disparities between the challenges teachers encounter and the training they receive in their education programs and professional development within early childhood education.
