Abstract

This study investigates the pedagogical approaches and intended learner outcomes reported by 92 educators across over 30 U.S. science museums and centers of varying sizes and contexts. Using survey data, we examined how educators align strategies such as hands-on, inquiry-, play-, and story-based learning with diverse audiences and program formats. Despite frequent use of research-informed practices, many educators lacked familiarity with formal pedagogical terminology, revealing opportunities for connecting theory and practice. Findings highlight the intentionality behind program design and underscore the value of lived expertise in informal science education. We discuss implications for professional development, emphasizing the need to bridge experiential knowledge and research-based frameworks to enhance evaluation and collaboration across institutions.
