Punctuating AI in the Classroom: A Design Case for Empowering Students with AI Literacy

Fri, April 10, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

This design case details the construction of a course constructed to prepare graduate education students with both technical fluency and critical awareness of GenAI tools. This design case contributes to the growing field of transformative teacher education by presenting an innovative, modular course that integrates generative AI (GenAI) within an inclusive, equity-driven pedagogical framework. Positioned at the intersection of multiliteracies, Universal Design for Learning, and translanguaging pedagogy, the course reimagines how educators are prepared to critically engage with emerging technologies. By documenting implementation processes, identified student outcomes, and the contextual factors that shaped learning, this design case offers a replicable model for teacher education programs seeking to align technological innovation with justice-oriented practice.
