AI Competency and the Integration of AI in Learning: Views of University Master Students

Thu, April 9, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

This study investigated graduate students' perspectives on AI competency and integrating AI into learning. Interviews with 15 master's students in education in Belgium revealed that although they use AI tools daily, they often lack sufficient AI competency and clear guidelines for ethical and responsible use. Students expressed uncertainty about which uses of AI may violate the general rules or the university policies. They highlighted a need for structured guidance on applying AI for academic tasks such as literature reviews, outlining papers, and brainstorming. These findings underscore the need to embed AI competency in curricula and offer insights for policymakers and curriculum designers to promote responsible AI integration in higher education.
