Abstract

Antisemitism is on the rise in the US and K-12 schools. As a field that emphasizes the importance of understanding identity and oppression, social studies is uniquely positioned to combat antisemitism. Using HebCrit, this in-depth interview study aims to explore the experiences of Jewish social studies teachers working in public schools in one midwestern metro area. Results reveal that Jewish social studies teachers incorporate Jewish knowledge and practices into their teaching, and experience a range of antisemitism in their school communities. The significance of this work underscores the importance of centering Jewish people’s experiences not only to understand and combat antisemitism, but also because Jewish educators possess a wealth of cultural knowledge that they effectively leverage in their teaching practices.
