Implementing and Improving Inclusive Strategies for Equity in Education: Politics as Praxis in Turkish Educational Environment

Abstract

This presentation discusses the historical development and current status of strategies for inclusion in the Turkish education system in the context of their impact on equity and social cohesion. Starting from the faith-based education model in the Ottoman Empire, the transition to a centralized and secular system during the Tanzimat period is examined and how education was used as a fundamental tool in nation-building after the proclamation of the Republic is analyzed. In the post-1980 period, it is emphasized that neoliberal policies have deepened socio-economic inequalities in the education system. In this framework, the challenges posed by Türkiye's cultural and linguistic diversity in the field of education are addressed and the growing need for multicultural and inclusive education policies, especially for Syrian refugee students, is discussed. Furthermore, inclusive education strategies are examined from the perspective of the education community, policymakers and administrators, and a comparative analysis with similar practices in the MENA region is presented. The chapter concludes with policy recommendations for equitable distribution of resources, teacher support and strengthening social justice based on education reforms.
