Abstract

This qualitative study explores how NCAA Division I men’s basketball coaches perceived the role of college presidents in shaping athletic program success. Using content analysis of open-ended survey responses from 17 head coaches across 13 conferences, two core themes emerged: communication and collaboration, and presidential vision and influence. Coaches valued presidents who were supportive yet non-intrusive, emphasizing the importance of open communication, aligned goals, and strategic investment in athletics. Findings suggest that visible, communicative, and student-centered presidents can enhance recruitment, team morale, and overall program culture. These results contribute to literature on intercollegiate athletics by illuminating the strategic leadership role university presidents play in the development of high-profile sports programs.
