Productive Collaboration and Dialogue: The Role of Openness to Mutual Shaping through Transaction in Mentoring

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to generate understandings related to teachers’ participation with and understandings of mentoring and collaboration. From this study, I identified that productive collaboration rooted in dialogue is necessary for effective mentoring that benefits both mentors and mentees. From the generated data, I developed five characteristics that index productive collaboration rooted in dialogue. For this facet of the study, I share findings relevant to the first dialogical characteristic of mutual shaping through transaction as well as contextual factors that specifically influenced this characteristic. This study foregrounds an important and enduring need related to new teacher induction and presents a new way of thinking about mentoring highlighting upon the important components of productive collaboration, dialogue, and context.
