Building Capacity for Asian Dual Language Programs: Insights from Korean Bilingual Teacher Preparation

Fri, April 10, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 515B

Abstract

Reflecting on Korean bilingual teacher preparation, this presentation offers insights to inform broader efforts to build capacity for Asian dual language programs. Grounded in institutional and statewide initiatives that promote equity, inclusivity, and linguistic diversity, it identifies challenges in recruiting, preparing, and retaining bilingual educators in Asian languages—challenges shaped by systemic underrepresentation and limited credentialing pathways. Drawing from leadership experience within California’s largest teacher preparation system, we examine current practices and share approaches rooted in CSP, language-specific supports, and cross-sector collaboration. Particular attention is given to efforts addressing educator shortages and expanding pipelines for Asian bilingual education programs. The session concludes with practical recommendations for researchers, teacher educators, and institutional leaders committed to sustaining and scaling Asian dual language education.
