Abstract

This study explores two student-led problem-based learning (PBL) projects developed collaboratively across Slovenian higher education institutions to support student learning and address sustainable digital transitions in rural regions. Through academic mentorship, employer/community partnership, and real-world inquiry, interdisciplinary student teams addressed real-world challenges and created innovative tools and solutions. Using a qualitative case study approach, including student reflections, self-evaluations, and focus groups, thematic analysis revealed student growth in critical thinking, interpersonal skills, and sense of purpose. The findings highlight the potential of interdisciplinary, work-based PBL to promote student agency, innovation, and social impact in real-world, underserved contexts. The paper contributes to future-facing higher education by emphasizing practical application, collaborative problem-solving, and transformative project-based learning experiences.
