Classroom Implementation of an Online Science Modeling Environment that Provides AI-Driven Feedback to Student Drawings

Wed, April 8, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

ScienceSketch, an online sketch-based science learning environment, was developed to support upper elementary science by engaging students in modeling. ScienceSketch was implemented in nine fourth grade classrooms with 179 students in spring 2025: Students completed Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)-aligned modeling activities on three topics. ScienceSketch provides immediate, customized guidance to help students revise their science models via a multimodal large language model. Observations and interviews indicate the platform's feasibility and student engagement. Preliminary findings suggest model revisions following ScienceSketch’s feedback could hold potential for boosting science learning; additional analyses are forthcoming to examine learning changes before and after using the platform.
