Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has the potential to foster creativity in learning contexts. However, its roles in creativity remain fragmented and underexplored. Applying the 4Ps framework of creativity, this review synthesizes findings from 39 empirical studies (2020–2025) to examine how Human-GenAI collaboration influences learners’ creativity, the mechanisms shaping these effects, and the instructional strategies currently used.
Results reveal that GenAI enhances creativity across three (Person, Process, Product) of the 4Ps theoretical framework of creativity, with 92.3% of studies reporting positive outcomes such as elevated creative self-efficacy, etc. However, 28.2% studies also identify concerns. Moreover, the impact of GenAI is mediated by both technical factors and learner factors. Pedagogically, reflective strategies and constructive approaches outperform didactic methods in nurturing creativity.
