Abstract

This study examines the impact of mentor training on undergraduate research experiences within a Physics and Astronomy REU program. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research compares two student cohorts—one with faculty who received mentor training and one without. Findings reveal that mentor training significantly improved students’ research self-efficacy, career outlook, and perception of research value. Interview data further highlight that trained mentors fostered stronger communication, more meaningful hands-on research, and clearer student articulation of their contributions to the mentor’s work. These outcomes suggest that mentor training enhances both the quality of mentoring and students’ outlook in STEM. Results inform best practices for faculty development aimed at increasing student retention in scientific research careers.
