Preparing Prospective Counselors for Classroom-Based Career Guidance Using Video Vignettes

Thu, April 9, 4:15 to 5:45pm PDT (4:15 to 5:45pm PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: 3rd Floor, Plaza II

Abstract

Career guidance in schools is often provided by counselors with tasks similar to teaching. Video vignettes, already used in teacher training, were developed for counselor training on classroom instruction. Our study assessed prospective counselors’ self-efficacy before and after the intervention using questionnaires. Additionally, interviews and written reflections were analyzed to determine how prospective counselors engaged with the vignettes. Results showed increased self-efficacy across most dimensions. The video vignettes enabled prospective counselors to anticipate scenarios they might not have otherwise considered. Notably, the social context, such as group discussions, exposed them to diverse perspectives and significantly contributed to their learning experience. These findings highlight the potential of video vignettes for broader use in career counselor training.
