The Invisible Pillar: Challenges Facing Educational Psychology and its Place in Teacher Preparation

Sun, April 12, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the functioning of educational psychology within teacher preparation programs (TPPs). To better understand the present challenges that may exist, we interviewed 21 educational psychologists. Preliminary analyses revealed that participants had a range of experiences regarding the value of educational psychology and accuracy in understanding it at their institutions. Participants noted that siloing may contribute to these challenges. They tied these challenges to the inclusion (or lack thereof) of educational psychology courses in TPPs. Finally, participants reflected on the challenges described by Patrick et al. (2011) including the relevance of educational psychology, developing shared visions with teacher education colleagues, and producing evidence of the benefits of educational psychology for practicing teachers.
