Enhancing Student Engagement Through Instructional Fidelity: A Translational Research Partnership in an Urban Charter School

Sun, April 12, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

This case study explores Theory of Change in which consistent, research-based instructional practices—supported by coaching, reflection, and data use—lead to improved student engagement and learning outcomes. A K–5 urban charter school partnered with a post-doctoral fellow to address behavioral challenges and instructional inconsistency by implementing bi-weekly teacher action goals guided by Learning by Scientific Design principles (Deans for Impact, 2020). Using GoReact video reflection tools and observational rubrics, the team tracked student engagement across cognitive, behavioral, and emotional domains. Classrooms with strong implementation achieved over 85% student engagement. Instructional coaching was a key factor in teacher development. Findings affirm that instructional fidelity, paired with reflective systems, can transform engagement. Next steps include expanding coaching capacity, data-driven PLCs, and sustainable observation practices.
