Gender Representation in Instructional Materials: A Study of Chinese MRL Textbooks and Teachers’ Voices

Thu, April 9, 4:15 to 5:45pm PDT (4:15 to 5:45pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

This study examined the gender representation in primary school Morality and Rule of Law (MRL) textbooks in mainland China, examining both textual descriptions and visual illustrations. Drawing upon quantitative data on character demographics, pedagogical functions, and activity engagement, as well as qualitative insights into gendered traits and roles, the research identifies persistent, albeit sometimes subtle, unequal gender representations. Findings indicate a notable male dominance in overall character count, specific pedagogical and narrative roles (e.g., famous characters, actors), and activity domains (e.g., work, sports), while females are more frequently depicted in traditional caregiving and domestic roles. The analysis also highlights the critical role of teachers in mediating these representations and fostering more equitable gender concepts among students.
