In this methodological paper, we investigate the potential of verbal protocol analysis for online multimodal text reading. Online multimodal reading refers to meaning-making by integrating two or more modes of meaning representation as readers read and comprehend online texts. Multimodal analysis is imperative in digital literacies research due to the prevalence of multimodal texts in today’s reading practices. We integrate verbal protocol analysis, a well-known qualitative reading research methodology, with multimodal analysis to suggest a way to investigate multimodal reading comprehension. We describe each method and demonstrate empirical study examples as applicable, qualitative analytic methods for investigating online reading research using multimodal texts.
