Throughout this presentation, I seek to shed the limelight on Algeria’s decolonial past and present, and to propose a new vision for education research.
The Algerian Independence war (1954-1962) and its subsequent educational policies- such as Arabization, literacy campaigns, and the recent recognition of Berber languages- offer a rich yet underexplored areas.
This presentation will investigate three important historical turning points in Algerian education, which are respectively: (1) French colonial schooling as a tool of erasure. (2) post- independence Arabization as a site of internal tension and cultural reassertion and (3) the late recognition of Amazigh language as a national and official language. This research is based on textual analysis of interviews and historical documents.
