Abstract

This multiple case study examines the impact of bilingual home visitors on chronically absent Latinx students in Spanish dominant homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, this study aims to explore the causes for Latinx student absenteeism and the impact of LEAP, a Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE)-funded home visit program on Latinx Spanish-speaking families whose children were chronically absent during the 2020-2021 school year. Data consisted of interviews with 16 Spanish-speaking Latinx families. Results indicated that LEAP, and in particular bilingual home visitors approached their work with Spanish-speaking Latinx families by building trusting relationships, offering mentoring to students, maintaining high expectations of accountability, and creating opportunities for students to succeed.
