Measuring Principal Program Effectiveness: A Systematic Review of the Literature

Wed, April 8, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Abstract

The purpose of this systematic literature review on principal pipelines is to explore the landscape of measuring success within principal preparation programs, with a focus on programs that aim to diversify the profession in relation to geography (rural and urban) and participant background (race and ethnicity). Darling-Hammond et al.’s (2009) characteristics of exemplary preparation programs served as a conceptual framework for this review. Findings outline a set of guiding principles that can be used to develop and assess principal preparation programs that are best aligned to our imagined futures of equitable teaching, learning, and leading. Findings also have the potential to support future policy targeted to state, university, and district pipeline programs.
