Abstract

National conversations about whether college is worth it are deeply intertwined with how postsecondary institutions contribute to students’ career plans and reaching their career goals. Despite comprising a large share of college-goers, it is not well understood whether college students from low-income backgrounds benefit from commonly offered career preparation activities. This mixed-methods study examined the link between participation in common career development activities and career-self-efficacy among low-income collegians. We also identify key qualitative insights that offer direction for college career services leadership, staff, and other postsecondary stakeholders on delivery of career support that resonates with low-income students and inspires their confidence.
