Listening to Prevent Educational Displacement: A Case Study

Wed, April 8, 11:45am to 1:15pm PDT (11:45am to 1:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 304B

Abstract

Through careful textual analysis of Walking Away from Hate, co-authored by Jeanette Manning (Lauren’s mother) and Lauren Manning (2021), the descent into a radicalized community and the adoption of a narrative of hate will be illustrated. With Lauren’s first experiences of Educational Displacement occurring at school, one of the fundamental drivers of her radicalization was that she did not feel listened to by anyone in her life. This paper will spotlight the protective power of listening - in terms of listening as a protective factor against hate - by drawing upon Megan Laverty’s (2011) conception of listening education where it is through “the act of listening that humans fulfill, or fail to fulfill, the imperative that we seek to understand others."
