Abstract

This study focuses on doctoral students' participation in professional development (PD), the professional development needs of doctoral students, as well as the extent to which doctoral programs prepare students for careers. Using survey data, the findings show that while students frequently participate in teaching, leadership, and academic writing PD, there is a growing demand for career preparation and non-academic training. Uncertainty about career direction and unpreparedness for non-academic roles were seen across the responses. These findings highlight potential gaps in current PD support within doctoral education and offer actionable guidance for institutions seeking to improve and tailor PD programming to better meet diverse doctoral career pathways.
