Building Instructional Leadership Capacity through a Virtual Summer Institute for School Leaders

Fri, April 10, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Abstract

We explored school leaders’ perceptions of a Virtual Summer Leadership Institute (VSLI) to assess their satisfaction with its virtual format and the effectiveness of two instructional tools—MOOPIL (Massive Open Online Professional Individualized Learning) and VPLC (Virtual Professional Learning Community)—in enhancing teacher instruction. The two-day VSLI at a large land-grant university in the southwestern U.S. was implemented through the LEADER model: Leading questions, Engagement, Applied research, Discussion, Examples, and Reflection. Data were collected through a survey. Findings indicated that participants were satisfied with the virtual delivery of the VSLI and found MOOPIL and VPLC to be valuable tools for improving instructional capacity among teachers.
