Wed, April 8, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: 4th Floor, Diamond 9

Abstract

Ka‘ohekani is a Hawaiian music program at Windward Community College that empowers public school teachers to reinsert mele, ‘ukulele, and cultural knowledge into Hawai‘i classrooms. Grounded in Indigenous pedagogy, the program helps educators reclaim cultural identity, strengthen student engagement, and integrate Hawaiian music across content areas. This study draws on survey and interview data from participants to examine how the program impacts teaching practice, Hawaiian identity, and school culture. Findings suggest Ka‘ohekani fosters deeper use of ʻōlelo Hawai‘i, student-led composition, and community engagement. The presentation highlights how culturally rooted, arts-based education can serve as a vehicle for Indigenous empowerment and systemic transformation within public education.
