Interconnectivity for the Island Ridge Curve: A Demonstration with Growth Mindset and Self-Concept in Reading

Wed, April 8, 11:45am to 1:15pm PDT (11:45am to 1:15pm PDT), Westin Bonaventure, Floor: Level 2, Mt. Washington

Abstract

This study proposes the concept of interconnectivity for the Island Ridge Curve (IRC) to explain the complex relationship between different learner attributes and learning. To demonstrate this, we utilized growth mindset and self-concept data from the 2018 Program for International Student Assessment, which included 476,840 students from 74 countries/territories. We used multilevel mixture modeling to analyze data. Our results showed that (1) growth mindset yielded slightly larger effects on reading, and these effects varied across different reading proficiency groups, and (2) self-concept mediates and moderates the relationship between growth mindset and reading achievement, with these mediated and moderated effects also varying across proficiency groups. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
