Wed, April 8, 11:45am to 1:15pm PDT (11:45am to 1:15pm PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Ground Floor, Gold 2

Abstract

Part of graduation requirements at a southeastern U.S. P12 laboratory campus include completing AP Research or Senior Research Project supported by university faculty mentors. Research highlights benefits to mentees, yet few studies examine the value for mentors in a secondary setting. This mixed-methods study surveyed and interviewed higher education faculty who mentored high school student-researchers. Findings highlighted an overall positive experience, with most willing to serve as a future mentor and recommend the experience to colleagues. Challenges included limited institutional recognition and varying student engagement. The study suggests mentorships can enrich faculty work while strengthening collaboration between P12 schools and higher education institutions. Involving mentors in program design provides attractive opportunities while recruiting a diverse pool of future mentors.
