Abstract

Sites of racialized trauma can be transformative for student learning and reflection, particularly for Black preservice teachers learning Black histories at these sites. Historic sites can also serve as sites for learning historical counterstories. That said, historic plantation sites often omit the histories of Black people at their sites, including the violence that enslavers inflicted upon enslaved Africans, from the narratives they present to visitors. Using BlackCrit and difficult-ish history, this study examines Black elementary preservice teachers’ perspectives of and experiences at historic plantation sites.
