University can be a place for exploration, growth, and support for students. However, the university environment is not one where some students feel as though they belong. This is particularly true for transgender and/or gender non-conforming (TGNC) students. The present study used focus groups to explore TGNC undergraduates’ (N=10) experiences with belonging in their classes/majors as well as their anticipated careers. Utilizing thematic analysis, we highlight the complexities of the TGNC student experience. We discuss the push and pull of other’s perceptions while having to navigate the environment itself, as well as the toll of dress codes/expectations in their future careers. We then highlight key ways to support TGNC students in a university setting.
