Abstract

This qualitative study explored how underrepresented women in STEM, entering their final undergraduate year, make meaning of their current and future STEM trajectories. Drawing on narratives from nine participants in a multilevel STEM support program, we examined how envisioned post-graduation lives shape present motivation and decision-making. Findings reveal that future-oriented mindsets fostered active engagement in various academic and career development opportunities, both within and beyond the program. These experiences were instrumental in students’ motivations, efforts, and choices, shaping their current efforts through their visions of the future. These findings illustrate the potential and promise of future time perspective and STEM programs in supporting underrepresented undergraduate students across the STEM pipeline.
