Abstract

The socialization process in Ed.D. programs affiliated with the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED) differs from traditional Ed.D. programs. This mixed-methods case study examines the socialization of program graduates from a CPED-affiliated Ed.D. program, focusing on their perspectives (N = 50). We fielded a web-based questionnaire and conducted follow-up interviews with 20 graduates. The instruments included questions related to socialization, mentoring, pedagogy, and self-efficacy. The study contributes to the research and practice of Ed.D. program pedagogy and mentoring, while advancing theory through a revised concept model of socialization that more closely represents the student experience in Ed.D. programs. Preliminary findings indicate that the dissertation-in-practice experience and mentoring relationships are central to the socialization process.
