Abstract

While studies highlight the influence of pre-college engineering programs on students’ decisions to pursue engineering, the role of school counselors in this process remains underexplored. This study investigates how counselors perceive engineering and incorporate these perceptions into their counseling practices. By engaging counselors in a structured two-phase photovoice process—an arts-based qualitative methodology—the study aims to gain deeper insights into their understanding, beliefs, and initiatives that impact their support for student pathways into engineering. The study aims to expand the application of photovoice within engineering education by engaging high school counselors, an often-overlooked group in traditional efforts, to increase participation in STEM fields. It also offers recommendations to enhance counselors’ preparation and involvement in supporting engineering career pathways.
