Abstract

Little research exists on families teaching practices for their children in the home setting, and even less research exists on science instruction delivered in the home. This descriptive case study opened a window onto education at home and examined the choices family members made while teaching science to their children at home. The participants in this study were part of a Hawai’i charter school’s educational program designed to facilitate strong partnerships between families and teachers. The study collected data over a full year from three participants, and it revealed the participants’ strong skills in teaching. Implications from the study suggest embracing families’ instincts about their children’s learning and emphasizing meaningful partnerships between families and school.
