Thu, April 9, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 515B

Abstract

International graduate students significantly enrich U.S. higher education but experience intensified challenges due to educational policy and recent shifts. Previous studies mostly overlook graduate-specific experiences, neglecting gaps concerning their unique challenges. This current qualitative study utilized semi-structured interviews with 29 participants from diverse cultural backgrounds and academic disciplines, capturing nuances of their lived experiences and challenges. Preliminary findings highlight substantial concerns surrounding visa stressors and perceived institutional inadequacies in addressing their specific needs. To deal with their complex issues, participants reported using peer networks, community support, and scarce institutional resources. Findings also highlight the urgent need for targeted institutional support policies and practices to enhance international graduate students’ academic outcomes and well-being in the evolving U.S. educational context.
