Folded Futures: The Exquisite Corpse of Citizenship and the Emergence of Planetizen

Abstract

Today’s planetary and civilizational crisis urge us to rethink the political concept of citizenship. We ask: What if we reimagined citizenship by resituating humans and non-humans as members of a shared, intra-connected planet? This study draws on data co-created with students in two workshops, which invited them to engage with the emerging concept of planetizen. Rather than applying a fixed theory, we use diffraction to bring planetizen into being through data. Doing so, we shift from asking what the concept means to exploring what it can do–by reading ideas, experiences, and data through one another to trace how they entangle and produce new meanings. The findings fuel thinking about multispecies justice, disruptive subjectivities, and speculative repair.
