Abstract

Policymakers, practitioners, and scholars increasingly recognize the negative impact of trauma on students and educators and the need for more trauma-sensitive schools. The Philadelphia Healthy and Safe Schools (PHASeS) program was designed to create trauma-sensitive environments in three urban elementary schools by providing professional development, coaching, crisis management, and daily support to staff and students. The PHASeS intervention stands out among trauma-sensitive programs by prioritizing educator awareness and wellbeing alongside student support.

Preliminary evidence suggests successful implementation, with teachers reporting improved trauma knowledge, skills, and personal well-being. Although immediate impacts on teacher attendance and turnover were not evident, the program appears effective in enhancing knowledge and skills. The connection between awareness of trauma and decreased burnout may be particularly promising.
