Faculty Participation in Community-Engaged Scholarship and Artistry: A Mixed Methods Study

Fri, April 10, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Gold Level, Gold 1

Abstract

This presentation responds to the call for further research on faculty participation in community-engaged scholarship and artistry (CESA). This mixed-methods study draws on the Faculty Engagement Model (Wade & Demb, 2012), which proposes a dynamic interaction between personal, professional, communal, and institutional factors influencing faculty participation in CESA. During the Fall of 2024, we fielded a questionnaire to full-time faculty (N = 658) and received 204 responses, before conducting 12 semi-structured interviews with community-engaged faculty representing 7 different disciplines. Preliminary findings from a binary regression analysis revealed that epistemology, disciplinary positionality, and professional motivation were predictive of participation in CESA. Interviewees were likely to describe linkages between their ethno-racial identity, personal values, and participation in CESA.
