AAC Communication Partners' Knowledge of Abuse-Related Vocabulary Organization on AAC Devices

Wed, April 8, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Ground Floor, Gold 2

Abstract

Individuals who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) often lack the vocabulary needed to report or discuss experiences of abuse. This study used a survey to explore communication partners’ familiarity with abuse-related terms, perceived access for AAC users, and comfort with instruction. Results showed limited vocabulary availability on devices, especially for sexual, financial, and cultural abuse. Many respondents reported discomfort teaching these concepts, despite recognizing their importance. Most systems lacked a centralized folder for abuse-related words. Findings highlight the urgent need for targeted training, improved vocabulary organization, and further research involving AAC users themselves to support safety and self-advocacy.
