Abstract

This study examines technology integration in AI-generated lesson plans based on the 8th-grade Massachusetts “United States and Massachusetts Government and Civic Life” standards. Two datasets were collected. First, 311 lesson plans – and 2,230 activities – were generated from popular generative AI chatbots (ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot) for all 53 standards. Second, 112 lesson plans were generated from popular GenAI tools for educators (e.g., MagicSchool, Brisk, EduaideAI, PadletTA) based on 19 representative standards. Using the PICRAT Model for Technology Integration in Teacher Preparation, we found that GenAI chatbot-generated learning plans offered only limited and teacher-centered uses of technology that rarely encouraged students to engage in creative and transformative digital learning experiences. Analysis of the second dataset is currently underway.
