Abstract

Attempting fully integrated MMR is complex and requires attention to detail throughout the research process. This methodological paper proposes an approach to purposefully creating a qualitative nested sample in a sequential MM design using a researcher-determined rubric. Drawing on survey data from a previous study, I will illustrate my proposed seven step procedure and show how the rubric can help the researcher monitor their alignment with the study’s overall purpose and research questions, theoretically alleviating bias. The proposed approach fills a gap in the existing MM literature regarding “how-to” develop nested samples and a gap in the research literature on the use of rubrics for research design purposes; it is also adaptable and easily understood by novice MM researchers.
