Abstract

In a time marked by increasing teacher burnout (Carver-Thomas & Darling-Hammond, 2017), its negative impact on students (Madigan & Kim, 2021), overassessment (Koretz, 2017), restrictive education policies (Singh, 2025), and dehumanizing practices in the classroom (Reyes & Villarreal, 2016), schools are facing a critical moment. In response to these realities, we propose a framework that embraces humanizing practices to strengthen student, teacher, and community connections. This paper presents a pedagogical framework co-created with eighth-grade Chicanx middle school students by using hospitality as a lens to reimagine educational experiences. Our study explores the possibilities of this pedagogical framework we call Transformative Hospitality, utilizing research creation (Loveless, 2019; Springgay, 2022) as a methodological approach grounded in YPAR principles (Cammarota & Fine, 2010).
