Abstract

Current discourses on AI are mostly shaped by anglophone Euro-Western portrayals and expectations, which reinforces deep inequity across communities, particularly in terms of whose knowledge systems are invited to the technology’s lifecycle. As a multicultural and multi-sector team, we share our work with a shared goal of centering cultural and community perspectives for reimagining AI. Building on the existing and growing body of work, we explore how to build community-level knowledge on AI in collaboration with Indigenous Knowledge Holders. This study employs a case study approach to examine an AI workshop at a Tribal Community College. Insights from findings highlight the ways in which we can center relationality for AI literacy development as well as AI systems design.
