GenAI-Assisted Growth-Oriented Feedback: Enhancing Students’ Growth Mindset, Self-Efficacy and Performance in L2 Writing

Abstract

To provide L2 writing feedback that meets learners’ psychological needs, this study investigates the effects of GenAI-assisted growth-oriented feedback on students’ growth mindset, self-efficacy, and performance in L2 writing. In a nine-week, mixed-methods experiment, 74 Chinese high school students were randomly assigned to either an experimental group receiving growth-oriented feedback from the GenAI tool DeepSeek-R1 or a control group receiving corrective feedback from the same tool. Results from the mixed-design ANOVA indicated significant improvements for the experimental group across all three measured variables. 15 representative students were invited for the follow-up interviews to provide complementary information for the quantitative analysis results. This study demonstrates the pedagogical potential of GenAI-assisted growth-oriented feedback to enhance both psychological and academic achievement.
