Abstract

This study, based on ELs’ WIDA score analyses and teacher participants’ teaching observations, explores the effectiveness of a newly designed Social and Emotional Learning embedded Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SEL-e-SIOP) model. The model was designed by considering the Holistic paradigm, Reality Pedagogy, and School-Family Connections. 1,214 high school ELs’ WIDA scores and 106 participating teachers’ instructional observation were analyzed through t-test calculation to identify the effectiveness of the model. Data analysis results demonstrate statistical significance in ELs’ WIDA outcomes and high frequency increases in teacher’s implementation of SEL, CRT, and SIOP strategies. The study provides evidence on the effectiveness of our SEL-e-SIOP model and fills a crucial void in the existing literature.
