Transformative Sustainability Learning through a Life History: A Korean Climate Activist’s Journey

Thu, April 9, 4:15 to 5:45pm PDT (4:15 to 5:45pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Abstract

This study explores the transformative sustainability learning of a climate activist 'O' in South Korea through a life-history approach. The activist’s journey—from democratic struggles to community-based climate actions—reveals how heterogeneous materials and contexts throughout his life, ranging from the personal, political, to ecological level interact to form a moments of transformation. By foregrounding lived experiences as sites of transformation, and suggesting the learning unit as a learning assemblage that encompasses the non-human, this research contributes to theorizations of learning beyond institutional boundaries, challenging the epistemological limits of mainstream environmental education.
