Out-of-school learning (OSL) can positively influence students’ interest and intrinsic motivation. This paper examines various STEM OSL-Locations and their effects on the motivation and interest of elementary and secondary school students in two quantitative quasi-experimental comparison-group studies (n = 644). The results should help to integrate OSL more effectively in practice and reduce the low level of science skills and declining interest in STEM. To answer two research questions various statistical methods such as ANCOVA and MANOVA were used. Significant results indicate that a combination of factors, including multiple visits, digital media, immersive sites, hands-on activities, didactic preparation and voluntarism, can enhance motivation and interest. The paper concludes with an approach that addresses the identified factors.
