Abstract

This systematic review examines the relationship between period poverty and menstrual hygiene management (MHM) and their impact on educational outcomes in schools across Sub-Saharan Africa. It emphasizes how these issues affect girls' education by considering environmental and cultural factors, highlighting the importance of educational research for girls worldwide. Drawing on Afrofuturism, Africana feminism, and Ecological Systems Theory, we utilize the PICo framework to assess progress in promoting education and reducing barriers, including gendered socialization, menarche, and schooling. Our goal is to inform future research, policies, and initiatives that promote gender equity and enhance educational outcomes in girlhood, both regionally and globally.
